With the increasing focus on patient safety, it is essential that healthcare professionals develop the critical skill of accurate IV drug dosage calculations. eDose is an innovative, web-based, learning and assessment environment that uses screen-based simulations to facilitate understanding and mastery of the skills needed to safely and accurately perform medication dosage calculations in clinical practice. This presentation will provide participants with on overview of the new Injectable Medicines Therapy program, its functionality and key features from both learner and educator perspectives.

The IOM in "To Err is Human"(1999) identified a primary source of healthcare errors is found in medication dosing and administration. Also noted is that nursing students are having difficulty mastering medication numeracy skills. To meet these issues Presbyterian School of Nursing at Queens University of Charlotte has integrated the web-based instructional program, eDose (METI), into the curriculum. This presentation will share that experience in hopes of helping others implementing this innovative approach to teaching med math.

Description:
Injectable medicines are often the most complex and potent medicines, requiring complex calculations and methods of preparation and administration (NPSA 2009) To improve patient safety in this domain an authentic assessment program has been developed by NHS clinicians & Authentic World Ltd. Using expert system modeling techniques the team have created a technology enabled authentic clinical environment that engages practitioners in the learning & diagnostic assessment of cognitive competence when solving injectable medicines problems. This workshop explores and illustrates the environment.
