Using Waveform Display for HPS

We are in the process of upgrading our simulation facility and currently are unable to take a video feed off our regular patient monitor. In order to produce a parameter display for people watching the simulation and the debrief I have been using the Waveform Display software that came with our PediaSim ECS on our HPS computer. When I launch the software I get a message saying I have the wrong version of Java (1.5 instead of 1.3) and do I want to continue anyway? The display does work but tends to crash every couple of minutes so I constantly have to relaunch it.

Unfortunately Apple do not allow you to replace a newer version of Java with an older one (for good reason I'm sure) and the only post I've seen on how to update the METI software preferences involves some pretty scary Javascript

The Macbook we got with the Pediasim is also new but runs the Waveform Display software perfectly so I could port our entire patient and scenario library onto that and use it as our primary computer but that would cutter up the software and it rather defeats the object of having a nice shiny new iMac.

I was wondering if anyone else has come across this problem and has any kind of fix.

This is happening because your HPS was not setup to run the Waveform Display (WD), the HPS is not configured with WD, only the ECS family simulators and iStan go out with WD.
Still, here is some of the technical information and challenge:

-Java 1.3.1 should be installed in your system. Is very easy to check that by opening the Terminal and going to the following directory: /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions. Switching directory can be accomplished with the "cd" Unix command

-Once in the right directory, execute the "ls" command to check for all the versions of Java installed in your system

-You should be able to see:
1.3 -> 1.3.1
-and a directory called: 1.3.1 normally shown as:
drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 102 Feb 11 18:33 1.3.1
(date and time don't need to match)

If the directory does not exist, your system does not have Java 1.3.1 installed.

How to setup to the right version of Java? Depends on your "Unix Terminal" skills. Basically you need to make sure "Current" is pointing to the 1.3.1 directory.

If you're not sure of how to accomplish this, my recommendation is to contact METI Customer Support or your Sales representative to help you with this. Please, remember that at METI we treat the computer as an Instructor Workstation part of the simulator and not as a regular computer. We at METI, dedicate an enormous effort to make sure the system can operate under the "real-time" simulation requirements of our simulators. Any slight - improper change to the configuration can make your simulator to unstable.
