I am preparing for a scenario where my patient will be on an infusion. Can the infusion be run thru the medcation port/system to gain the physiologic response or should it be run thru the desktop interface only? The manual does not address infusions - only boluses.

What is the drug that is being infused? There are several medications in the drug profile that the appropriate route is via infusion versus bolus, like dobutamine.

My scenario uses anethesia induction with propofol. It is in the drug list as both a bolus and infusion drug. My question is whether the actula infusion should be run thru the physical medication system or thru vitual software, and if there is any difference physiologicly. RJ

The HPS drug recognition system (bar code reader) only recognizes "bolus" administrations. If administering an infusion, this would need to be done through the HPS software (Drug Tab) to obtain the physiological effects. You can administer the infusion via the same access port on the stopcock where you would administer a bolus dose, but the bar code reader will not recognize the infusion.

For realism, I strongly recommend using an actual infusion. Remember that you cannot run anything through the simulator's "IV" ports other than sterile water or distilled water though BUT for the learners it is better to actually manipulate/titrate using the appropriate tubing and pump system. This will not register the dose of the drug given so as the instructor you will have to manipulate the infusion dose under the drug tab to get the physiologic effects. I have not yet run the propofol to see the effect it has on the HPS but you may wish to go to the condition tab and work with neuromuscular blocade to increase the "sedation" appearance.
