METI live   METI LiVE

The vision of LiVE is to enhance patient safety by simulating the health care system, providing the opportunity to practice, prepare and analyze every aspect of the chain of care. Realization of the LiVE vision will bridge medical simulation from health care education to community-based health care practice.

pelvic   ExamSIM

A qualitative and quantitative study analyzing computer generated simulator data and written clinical assessments collected from medical students who performed physical examinations on three clinically different pelvic simulators. This study demonstrates a novel method of analyzing raw numerical data generated from a newly developed patient simulator; deriving performance indicators from computer generated simulator data; and assessing validity of those indicators by comparing them with written assessment scores. Results show the new assessment measures provide an objective, reliable, and valid method of assessing students’ physical examination techniques on the pelvic exam simulator.

PNCI   Program for Nursing
Curriculum Integration

METI recognizes that in order for nursing education to transform its approach to student learning, we must provide educators with the tools necessary to make the transition to patient simulation, as a pedagogical approach, easier. The Program for Nursing Curriculum Integration (PNCI) is METI’s answer to assist faculty with this transition and make more efficient use of their time as they embark on the use of patient simulation to facilitate learning and to assess competency. One of the primary benefits of the PNCI is that it is focused on nursing educational concepts and competencies, therefore no adjustments to the curriculum are required because it is already based on the same foundation. Thus, minimizing the impact on existing curriculum decreases faculty resistance to including patient simulation because it requires minimal incremental work on their part.

RESEARCH ARTICLES

matrix Integrating simulation training into the nursing curriculum
Amanda Wilford, Thomas J Doyle

Abstract
The use of simulation is gaining momentum in nurse education across the UK. The Nursing and Midwifery Council is currently investigating the use of simulation in pre-registration nursing. This article gives a brief history of simulation, discusses competence issues and why simulation is best placed to teach nurses in today’s health service. An innovative approach to implementing simulation into the nursing curriculum is introduced.

nurse Learning Nursing Research Through Faculty-mentored Projects
Patricia Ravert, PhD, RN
Ben Boyer, BS, RN
Kirsten Harmon, BS, RN
Holly Scoffield, BS, RN
Abstract
Baccalaureate nursing educators have incorporated nursing research content into the curriculum for many years. Our university also proposes that students have a faculty-mentored learning experience at least once during their undergraduate education. Student research, guided by a faculty mentor; provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn about and participate in nursing research. The authors describe a unique experience of nursing students working as research assistants in a faculty research project using a human patient simulator.
