RESEARCH ARTICLES

matrix Integrating simulation training into the nursing curriculum
Amanda Wilford, Thomas J Doyle

Abstract
The use of simulation is gaining momentum in nurse education across the UK. The Nursing and Midwifery Council is currently investigating the use of simulation in pre-registration nursing. This article gives a brief history of simulation, discusses competence issues and why simulation is best placed to teach nurses in today’s health service. An innovative approach to implementing simulation into the nursing curriculum is introduced.

nurse Learning Nursing Research Through Faculty-mentored Projects
Patricia Ravert, PhD, RN
Ben Boyer, BS, RN
Kirsten Harmon, BS, RN
Holly Scoffield, BS, RN
Abstract
Baccalaureate nursing educators have incorporated nursing research content into the curriculum for many years. Our university also proposes that students have a faculty-mentored learning experience at least once during their undergraduate education. Student research, guided by a faculty mentor; provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn about and participate in nursing research. The authors describe a unique experience of nursing students working as research assistants in a faculty research project using a human patient simulator.

SurgicalSIM™

The METI SurgicalSIM VR, TURP, and LTS, offer the surgical community a full-spectrum and continual learning system that allows the novice, the advanced resident and even the practicing surgeon the ability to develop and test their technical, cognitive, and medical decision-making skills in a safe environment.

The SurgicalSIM product line provides two specific learning modes as well as a third mode for the administrator. This flexibility allows the program director to create learning modules that best support the learner, to objectively measure and assess an individual learner’s progress, and to ensure each competency is met and mastered.

surgical   METIVision

METIVision a fully integrated, digital audio-visual management system that is data-synchronized in real-time for use with METI simulators. METIVision is the only solution available with the capability not only to capture and store simulation data, but to broadcast and review any medical simulation exercise using METI simulators. Physiologic datalogs, event logs, pharmacology logs and patient monitoring data – METIVision offers the capability to provide a complete record of your simulation exercise for debriefing, assessment and evaluation.

METIVision offers a complete audio/video management system including:

1. Ability to visualize and control the system from a central location.
2. Support for real-time (30 fps) video and audio streams.
3. Record and replay the entire simulation for facilitated debriefing and after-action review.
4. Broadcast simulation to internal and external locations.
5. Place-shift and time-shift the simulation recording.
6. Integration and synchronization of simulation recording with patient simulation logs and patient monitor to produce a complete objective record and establish "ground truth" for debriefing, assessment, and evaluation.
7. Patient-centric recording to follow patient through treatment over multiple locations in support of METI LiVE.
8. Room-centric recording to follow action in a specific location.
9. Observe and switch between multiple camera views (real-time, time-shifted) with zoom in/out capability.
10. Support to multiple streams (per-node/level of care location in either a METI LiVE or a CPTS system).

METI live   METI LiVE

The vision of LiVE is to enhance patient safety by simulating the health care system, providing the opportunity to practice, prepare and analyze every aspect of the chain of care. Realization of the LiVE vision will bridge medical simulation from health care education to community-based health care practice.

pelvic   ExamSIM

A qualitative and quantitative study analyzing computer generated simulator data and written clinical assessments collected from medical students who performed physical examinations on three clinically different pelvic simulators. This study demonstrates a novel method of analyzing raw numerical data generated from a newly developed patient simulator; deriving performance indicators from computer generated simulator data; and assessing validity of those indicators by comparing them with written assessment scores. Results show the new assessment measures provide an objective, reliable, and valid method of assessing students’ physical examination techniques on the pelvic exam simulator.

PNCI   Program for Nursing
Curriculum Integration

METI recognizes that in order for nursing education to transform its approach to student learning, we must provide educators with the tools necessary to make the transition to patient simulation, as a pedagogical approach, easier. The Program for Nursing Curriculum Integration (PNCI) is METI’s answer to assist faculty with this transition and make more efficient use of their time as they embark on the use of patient simulation to facilitate learning and to assess competency. One of the primary benefits of the PNCI is that it is focused on nursing educational concepts and competencies, therefore no adjustments to the curriculum are required because it is already based on the same foundation. Thus, minimizing the impact on existing curriculum decreases faculty resistance to including patient simulation because it requires minimal incremental work on their part.

surgical   SurgicalSIM™

Surgical Simulators offer hands-on simulations for minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery (e.g., METI SurgicalSIM™). This platform offers a continual learning system that allows the novice, the advanced learner, and even the practicing surgeon the ability to develop and test their technical, cognitive and medical decision-making skills in a safe environment. Moreover, proficiency can be measured for aspects such as trocar placement, respect for tissue, suturing and teamwork skills. This platform is being expanded to cover open and robotic surgical skills, as well as, extended into other surgical specialties, such as Urology and Gynecology.
